About the piano

A transparent voice, out of Japan's piano history

The Shigeru Kawai SK-3 in the 7F Main Room comes from a different design tradition. What you play comes straight back to you, making this room equally suited to daily practice and final preparation before a performance.

Design

Designed by Hataiwa Ohashi

DIAPASON pianos were designed by Hataiwa Ohashi, a gifted Japanese piano engineer, drawing on German piano design. The thinking behind the instrument comes through directly in its sound.

Tone

A pure, transparent voice

Its greatest appeal is a neutral tone with nothing exaggerated. Because it does not lean toward any particular colour, it suits anything from classical to pop. What you play is what comes back to you.

Contrast

A different instrument from the SK-3

The Shigeru Kawai SK-3 in the 7F Main Room was designed on different principles. Play the same piece on both and the touch, and the way the sound carries, are clearly different.

Frequently asked questions

What people most often ask about the DIAPASON Room (5F).

How is this different from the 7F Main Room?
The piano. The 7F Main Room has a Shigeru Kawai SK-3; the DIAPASON Room (5F) has a vintage DIAPASON. Rates, booking, and opening hours (5:00–24:00) are the same. Note that ticket books and the overnight pack cannot be used in the 5F room, and capacity is up to 3 people.
What kind of piano is a DIAPASON?
DIAPASON pianos draw on German piano design. Their appeal is a pure, transparent and neutral tone that does not lean toward any particular colour, so the instrument suits a wide range of music.
Are the rates different from the 7F Main Room?
